These actions happen as a result of a web of choices and years of conditioning. I applaud and admire the survivor here for knowing her worth to come forward in the first place and continue speaking out when the accountability was completely lacking. And I applaud and admire the support systems around her who are backing her up every step of the way.

I meet so many students who completely inspire me with hope. And I hear stories that gut me like this (and others that don’t make the national news).

The one stat I hold onto like a lifeboat in a sea of depressing statistics is the fact that if a leader or person in power holds someone accountable the SECOND they cross a line, it creates safer environments for everyone. The MOMENT a joke is made or a boundary is tested, if someone in a position of power says basically, “No. Not ok. That won’t stand here.”…reports plummet and people feel (and are) safer and more supported.

Of course the people directly involved need to be held the most accountable. But who supplied the drugs? Who looked the other way? Who else saw the Snapchat and didn’t call the police? Who listened to her report and asked what she was wearing? Who thought an essay would be enough? Who created a culture where even the thought of this would be ok? Who is waiting RIGHT NOW for all this to blow over so they can return to “business as usual”?

Big changes happen with small choices. Look out for each other and, Heavens to Betsy, be freaking KIND.

If you want to learn, you’ll figure out a way to learn even through a screen. But if you’ve never figured out how to learn or don’t have that natural curiosity or hunger, it is so ineffective to do it by screen. Even minor lessons that are taken in aren’t really implemented for long. Deep learning, resonant learning, emotionally attached lessons- they need in person experiences.
